Is this class beneficial for the non- major? I don't think this class is major specific; anyone can benefit from the information and topics discussed. It gives valuable information for the average college student. I think everyone needs to be familiar with the topics discussed. It was helpful to learn about analogue vs digital. As a music major, I was able to relate the analogue vs digital discussions to the industry and how they affect sales as well as publicity and overall success. The internet age as a whole is one facet that this present culture adapts to very easily but doesn't understand fully. We use it for entertainment rather than for financial gain. They are so many different ways anyone can use the internet resources provided on every campus toward financial enhancement. Youth today should be exposed to the material in this class and taught how to tap into the many opportunities on the web. I am glad I took this course; it was interesting to see how the internet plays such a large role in the management world today. Everyone wants to get famous but because of the internet and technological advances-- people have become lazy and therefore the drive to "pound the pavement" as entrepreneurs has died. But because I have learned the internet can be a tool as well as a toy I can begin pushing for my business in the comfort of my own home!

The Allen Entrepreneurial Institute at Camp Exposure

This past weekend I attended The Allen Entrepreneurial Institute at Camp Exposure in Lithonia, Georgia for an entrepreneurship seminar. The brains behind this whole operation are Mr. Lecester Allen and his staff at Camp Exposure. Mr. Allen created this camp to help expose inner city youth in Detroit to something better and different that could motivate them to take school seriously and eventually move out of the violent inner city. With some of the money that Mr. Allen has accumulated over his career he started this camp. When you first pull into the property all you see is a huge building that looks like a mansion that has The Allen Executive House in bold black letters right across the top of the building. However this is just a hotel that Mr. Allen has on his property to house his guest. Shortly after we arrived to Camp Exposure we took a short tour of the 180 acre property and soon found out that The Alan Executive House was not the mansion that we had been told about before the trip. In the back of the property there is a drive way about 50 feet in length covered by trees that leads to Miss Rebecca’s House. Mr. Allan started having this mansion constructed in 2001 in memory of his mother who died 25 years ago. I’ll tell you what, the house looked good. There are also 3 lakes on his property along with and old farm, and about 10 other regular size houses. Mr. Allen decided when he was a child that he would build his mother an estate like the mansion on the plantation he grew up on. He definitely kept his word for that promise. Mr. Allen told all of us Clark Atlanta University business students that no one stays in Miss Rebecca’s Mansion and we could not believe it. Mr. Allen did not purchase all of these things to show them off, he did it to expose young black youth to something positive. Mr. Allen just started inviting colleges and universities to camp exposure 4 to 5 years ago. This year was Clark Atlanta University’s turn to attend Camp Exposure. I felt inspired from the beginning to the end of the seminar. I definitely understood why Mr. Allen would bring so many grade schools to Camp Exposure. After we toured the property and put our things away we started with lunch and after that it was seminar after seminar learning new things and thinking in different ways. We ended the day with dinner and etiquette training. Miss M taught us the dos and don’ts of etiquette at the dinner table.
The second day started with breakfast and back to back seminars on computer applications to business and on being a stronger person and better entrepreneur. After these seminars where over we went on a tour of black owned business and prominent black communities in Lithonia Georgia. We stopped at a black owned UPS store, dancing theater, and restaurant. All of the entrepreneurs that we met told us how they started in the entrepreneurship world. They all made it very clear that being an entrepreneur is not an easy job and requires an inhuman amount of energy to stay on top of your business. All of them had at least one business that failed but they told us it’s not about the mistakes you make, it’s about the recovery you make from those mistakes that makes you a stronger and better businessman. After we left from all the businesses we went on a sightseeing tour of a sub division in Lithonia. There where huge mansions on both sides of the street and 98% of the people that lived in and around that subdivision where African Americans. It was almost too much to take in at once because everywhere you turned there was another mansion just as big as the one before. At this point it was very easy to see how young African American youth could be influenced to start doing better to get to that level in life. After the tour was over we came back to The Allen Executive House and prepared for our performances that would take place later on that night. It was a short production introducing Clark Atlanta University to the Allen Entrepreneurial Institute at Camp Exposure. After this program was over it was time for dinner in Miss Rebecca’s house. This was the final surprise that Mr. Allen had for us. We walked in the mansion and had light hors dourves and conversation until dinner started. Once the dinner bell rang everyone went downstairs and ate. After dinner was over we were free to explore this beautiful house. This 5 story mansion has 19 bedrooms, 29 bathrooms, 2 dining rooms, 3 $350,000 chandlers, a 24k gold ceiling in the basement, 5 kitchens, 4 elevators, a swimming pool that divides the house in half, and Brazilian Cherry hardwood flooring throughout the entire house. It was the most amazing house I’ve ever seen in my life. We went back to The Allen Executive House when the night was over and got ready for our last night there.
The final day has come and we’re up early in the morning once again for breakfast. After breakfast was over we had words of encouragement from Miss Monae. She graduated from Morris Brown College in the AUC and went on to get her MBA from Harvard University. This was when tears started flowing from all the emotions people where having, but nevertheless they were tears of joy. After Miss Monae finished speaking we had a few more words of wisdom from an accountant entrepreneur. Once she was finished speaking it was time to leave. Everyone said their goodbyes and made some last chance networking opportunities. Soon we were on our way back to campus as better business students and entrepreneurs.

Second Exam

I can’t believe the semester is close to over. We were recently assigned our second exam and it seemed like such an easy topic until Professor Sistrunk left the length up to us. This gives you an endless canvas to fill with information. Technology is changing constantly, things that you would have never imagined are being created as I sit here typing. When I was just a youngin’ I had tons and tons of VHS. (I STILL HAVE THEM). I felt ancient at my garage sell when I tried to get rid of some of my tapes and the kids asked me what they were and had no clue what a VCR was. When I was younger I had cassette tapes, and you had to flip it over to get to the other half of the songs. CDs and DVDs have emerged within my lifetime and they are dying right before my eyes. It is crazy to be around during the birth and the death of certain technology. What is next to come. Movie theaters were a family outing to look forward to, and now they are slowly going extinct also. New technology is cool and everything but at what point do you stop and stay content with what is already around you. Sometimes it just seems like too much and too overwhelming. I guess I am just too old school for my generation. Give me a good VHS, or throw in an old school cassette tape and I am chillin!

Field Trip

Hello Fellow Classmates,
Yesterday, November 2 we went to a Internet Farm!!!!! Now i must say it was far more interesting than I thought (No offense Professor Sistrunk). I really didn't think I would be amazed but I was, and it was very informational. I would like to give props to Professor Sistrunk because everything we learned from the Internet farm we really covered in class. Where shall i began on our trip to the internet farm? Well for starters what I couldn't believe is that on little cord had so much power, those fiber cords are something dangerous! We could be walking on a whole bunch of fiber and not know! This little cord can allow internet access from Georgia to California in milliseconds. Something that has been on my mind what the guy said (I forgot his name) but it is proven that technology is getting way out hand and surpasses the human brain. Ya'll this is tooooo deep and I don't think sweet baby Jesus approves this!!! it makes perfect sense though, especially when he said that alot of these valuable things we have, there is already an upgraded version but they just let consumers purchase it so they can make their money then a year later come out with something new. I expressed this in class one day because I remember saying This about Apple. Y'all they are stickin us for our paper!!!! (in the words of Biggie) O wait...hold up... i have to tell you all my thoughts when i first entered, and by the looks of my classmates face we all thought the same thing. It felt like the Matrix walking in there and then we saw cages and I was thinking uh oh this is not toooo right. It was like everywhere we walked didn't feel to safe. I would have never thought there were places like that, the cages were really interesting to see because there are companies who invest in their own space for someone to monitor their websites and etc. One cage that was owned by a Fortune 500 company looked nice, it was color coded and huge and well organized. There was so much electricity being used you can feel the heat when you stand next to it. Then he start talking about prices and lawd have mercy i was thinking in my head WHOA!!!! the lowest price i heard throughout this whole experience was $8000. Nonetheless i enjoyed myself, it was a good experience and it was pretty cool to know everything he talked about because we learned it in class. So now my main focus is to find a need and pursue it so I can own a purple Bentley!!! lol

How the internet works

I like that no one really owns the internet; its just a global connection of networks. However, just because nobody owns the Internet, it doesn't mean it is not monitored and maintained in different ways. The Internet Society- a non-profit group established in 1992, oversees the formation of the policies and protocols that define how we use and interact with the Internet. you have to have an IP address and a domain name. Most people have to purchase internet space and it is usually about $10.00 for a year worth of airtime. From there you can build your webpage for whatever usage you want.

Now we know how the Internet works. But how long will it stay this way? The version of IP currently used on the Internet (version 4) only allows 232 addresses. Eventually there won't be any free IP addresses left. Surprised? Don't worry. IP version 6 is being tested right now on a research backbone by a consortium of research institutions and corporations. And after that? Who knows. The Internet has come a long way since it's inception as a Defense Department research project. No one really knows what the Internet will become. One thing is sure, however. The Internet will unite the world like no other mechanism ever has.

Government and the Internet

The internet really does make everything more convenient when it comes to the government. There are many features offered online that make life just a little bit easier.
Taxes for example are made effortless because of the internet. Now everyday people like you and me can do their taxes online by just following simple directions. I have personally used TaxAct.com and it was pretty simple. Registering your vehicle has become less of a hassle because of the internet. Now you can avoid those ridiculous DMV lines by paying your fees over the internet. Soon the government will probably have many other necessities available online maybe even voting.
Different states have different luxuries available online. I noticed the difference between Georgia’s and California’s online options once I moved here. In California when you receive a ticket it is electronic. They type everything into this little machine and a few seconds later your ticket is printed out. Within 24 hours your ticket is then in the system and you are able to pay it right away. When I first arrived in Georgia I was unaware of exactly what the parking signs meant, (why not just paint the sidewalk RED) and I received a parking ticket, ON CAMPUS OF COURSE!!!! I attempted to pay it right away and they told me that it wasn’t in the system yet and it could take 1 to 2 weeks before it was put in the system. I thought this was the slowest thing ever. In one to two weeks I might be broke! I might forget I had a ticket! WHY prolong the process. If Georgia invested in this technology and were more efficient life would be easier. Another process I encountered in Georgia was attempting to get a personalized license plate. In California there is a website you can go to that you are able to input what you want your plate to read and it will tell you if it is available or not right then and there. Out here… when I inquired about a personal plate and they gave me a piece of paper that said write down your top 4 options, mail it in, and within 7-10 business days they will be able to inform you if your options are available. ARE YOU SERIOUS?! By then someone else could have mailed in what I wanted. What if someone else wanted to be CAPEACH too? GOSH! I just think if Georgia stepped their game up and created a webpage to take care of this issue that it would make life easier….. Well at least for me.

When a fire breaks out !!!!!

Hello fellow classmates,
Recently I have experienced the worst possible situation to ever go through while in school. My apartment building caught on fire and damaged alot of my personal belongings. Unfortunately, the apartments in which i reside are inconsiderate, unorganized, ignorant, and just low down which has led me to take control over the situation. Its crazy because when you are a young tenant they take advantage of you because they think you are not aware of your rights. I am here to tell you how to find ways to get yourself out of this particular situation via web, and how to find a new home. There are alot websites available to answer any questions or concerns you may have about leases in the state of Georgia. The website I have listed below answers basic questions.

Today I walked up to my apartment to find a nice little note that said rent was still due on time and it posted the late fees and etc. When I tell yall angry is an understatement of how I felt and I have a few choice of words to tell to each individual in that office after all this legal stuff is taken care of, and I have to consult my lawyer to see if i can.It is very important that you consult a lawyer throughout this process because after all you dont want this to affect your credit...but anywho...I did a little research and come to find out HIGHLANDS RIDGE (dont ever move there by the way) is not up to par with fire codes. All apartments should have sprinklers in every room and there should be fire detectors. My apartment does not have sprinklers nor did they update the smoke detector because it never went off during the fire. Now i'm in the process of finding a new apartment and there are some websites that you can go to view the apartments you are interested in. These websites give you visual tours, the amount you may pay in rent, and reviews from other people who have lived in the homes.

African American Entrepreneur

African American entrepreneur are coming out the wood works, in these pivotal economic times this seems like the best thing going for a black person. Black people are making ways and kicking down barriers in every way possible. So many inventions and businesses are coming to past because african american people are taking iniatives. Even myself I have started my own vending machine company out of my college dorm. What would the world be without Black Entrepreneurs?

African American Small Business

African Americans and business? All I can do is shake my head. When did we become the least productive minority group? It doesn’t make any sense. Why don’t we spend money within our community before going straight to the “others.” Whats subliminally funny about the other minority businesses in our neighborhood is they’re selling things that could have easily had black owners. You have the Chinese selling chicken and rice, and chicken and French fries etc, you have the Koreans that own the cleaners, you have the Koreans and Chinese in the nail salons you have the Arabs running your corner stores and your “chicken spots”, the Chinese even own a soul food restaurant in Harlem. You have the Asians, who are possibly the most fined hair race in the world selling black hair products. I don’t get it. It makes me upset. Its not like these people are selling exclusive products like things we could have only got in china or Pakistan or Korea, they’re catering to your basic wants and capitalizing off of it. We as a people need to wake up. Or we’re going to be amongst the polar bears as an endangered species!

First Exam

Thursday October 14, 2010 in my entrepreneurship class, Professor Sistrunk gave us our first exam, the exam was straight forward as long as you were in class everyday you should pass it because it was based off Professor O's lectures. I feel like he gave too many short answer questions. I finished first and hopefully everybody did well. I hope the next exam has more multiple choice questions. The class is great and very interesting.

Let's Do This !

This is a scary time! It's a time of great risk. However, great risk means great rewards are available for those who take that risk. Its a time for young people to take the risk while you have few responsibilities. Take this time to learn so you can manage the risk and then go for it. You understand this technology better than the older generations. Your knowledge give you a fighting chance.
Notice, its the young people who stated Microsoft, Dell, Google, Yahoo, Facebook and others.

Industrial Age vs. Information Age

So we’re transcending from the industrial age, the age I was born into, to the information age, and I must say, it is pretty scary. Yes, I’m young and I have time to adjust, but life, as we know it, is completely changing. It’s a scary reality for me because life is becoming so impersonal. We’ve become a society addicted to digital connection. Eventually there will be no use for human labor, and I don’t know if that is necessarily a good thing or a bad thing, but I do know that human connection is absolutely essential to suitable maturity. Call me old school, (you cant because I’m young) but I’m not ready for this!

Your most important small business asset - Credit
In Thursday's class (Sept 9, 2010), Mr. William Carter (Coach Carter) spoke about credit and how the credit system works. Credit is one of your most important small business assets. Having good credit shows that you are probably a good businessperson who maybe worth investing with.
If you have poor credit, why would someone or a financing company want to invest with you.? If you can not practice the type of behavior (delayed gratification) that creates good credit and successful business people, then others will be less likely to believe in you.
I have had Coach Carter come to my classes since the mid-1990's. He is good at breaking down the credit maze into smaller items that most people can understand. He uses a booklet, packed with good information, to walk everyone through the credit system.
Today is the second class on credit will study actual credit reports. We will learn how to read them and compare fair/average reports with poor reports. Its hard to find good credit reports in today's economy.

Cheap vs Frugal
Its always interesting to me how people consider cheap and frugal the same. It's not.
Someone who is cheap will deny themselves of something because they do not want to spend the money. Even if they have the money, they may try to get someone else to buy it for them.
A frugal person will not deny themselves but will find the best deal. They will use information and knowledge to become a better consumer or negotiate a better deal.
In business this is crucial. You must invest in your business, so it can grow. Being a frugal person helps you become a smarter purchaser of good and services. You will be able to get a higher return on your investment because your are using your cash flow more effectively.
For example, I still see businesses with a separate fax phone number from their local phone company and a fax machine. The cost of this, even with under an annual plan, could be $30 - $50 per month. The frugal thing to do is get an efax service from an internet provider. The monthly cost will be $5.00 to $15.00 per month and the faxes will go to your email. This will save you toner and paper because you can view the fax on your PC (or Smart Phone) first and only print the faxes you need. You can store or delete the rest. To send a fax, use your all-in-one printer to scan documents into your PC or send .doc, .pdf & other files directly from your PC to a fax machine using your efax service.
You get the same or better service at 70% to 85% off and reduced office supplies.
That's being frugal.

Course is now available for CAU on-line registration
This course is now available for registration. The temporary name of the course is Special Problems in Management 25250 CBUS 497-02. This name allows for the course to be offered this semester. Once the class is successful, it will probably be added to the permanent curriculum as Management of Small Business Information Systems.
